Built-in Entertainment Center

Built-In Entertainment Center

This was actually a very simple project made from MDF sheets and poplar facing. The tabletop is actually 2 (2x10) Pine boards.

I started by taping out the design in order to get a better visual of what it was going to look like. Because the room is not very spacious, I made the upper cabinets only 12" deep and the bottom cabinets 18" deep. I used 2x6's as my base to put my MDF boxes on.

Don't worry, the ceiling fan was replaced.

What Worked Well With This Project:

The large cupboard space below has been great for all of the kids' toys and books. It gave us some much-needed storage space. I used Sherwin William's furniture paint which has held up extremely well even with toys and books getting shoved around inside the lower cabinets.

What Would I Have Changed?

Not much. This one turned out perfect for our needs. The hard thing was that in order to keep the entertainment center centered an balanced, I could not take it all the way over to the right wall, therefore there is a 9" space between the entertainment center and the wall. While the space is not ideal, it allows us to temporarily store some things to the side that would not fit in the cupboard. Also, I did not recess the upper cabinet doors. It saved me a lot of time because they don't require such a perfect fit.  I really like the recessed look so if I did it again, I would have recessed the upper doors as well.
