Closet Bunk Bed under $100

My parents recently purchased a small 2 bedroom condo here in town. We immediately noticed the lack of beds for the grandkids that come to visit. At the top of the stairs is a closet which is about 30" deep and 6' long. I realized it would be the perfect nook for a bunk bed.

I purchased some 6" primed pine planks from Home Depot and began cutting. This was meant to be a very inexpensive solution so I did not want to overdo the detail.

Rather than try to hide the screws, I went with a lath screw to give the screws a more finished look.

After I got it all assembled, I had to take apart in order to get it into the condo and into the closet.  While it was disassembled, I painted the bed with Sherwin Williams paint.

I got the 3" foam from Home Depot and then cut it to fit

The kids love it.

The Takeaways

What I liked: I loved how well the bed fit into the space which offers my parent's guests some additional sleeping options. It makes the space much more useful.

What I would do differently:
This bed was intended to be lightweight and inexpensive. The primed pine boards that I purchased from Home Depot were not a solid pine so while it was lightweight, I felt like it was not as sturdy as I would normally prefer. I would have preferred a solid pine or poplar.

Also, the top ladder rung is at the very top of the two side rails. Having that ladder rung that high makes it harder for the kids to get into the bed and on to the ladder. I would have brought the ladder rung down to match the lower part of the upper bed. Something I could easily change if I really wanted to.

I built this over 2 years ago now and it is holding up really well. It is in great shape.
